Function and importance of prescribed burns

18 Apr

As you might recall, in late fall 2010, the Chicago Park District implemented a prescribed burn in the Nature Area at Rainbow Beach Dunes. Jason Steger (Stewardship Coordinator for CPD) graciously passed along the photos below and pointed me to an exceptional video about prescribed burns produced by CPD and FEATURING Rainbow Beach Dunes!

Followup: Saturday March 26 Workday

5 Apr

Thanks to the brave few who came out for the cool and brisk workday on 3/26! Cleaning up trash in the Nature Area is a job that is never done, but it is a rewarding one: with only a handful of volunteers, we easily filled 8 bags in under two hours. Think how many we will fill when we have an entire volunteer brigade! And you will get your chance soon: in lieu of our regularly scheduled workday (last Saturday of the month), April’s event will be the Earth Day Parks and Preserves Clean Up AND the Rainbow Beach Park Health and Fitness Fair all happening on Saturday, April 16. Look for an email soon with more details.
